Travelling Instructions

Located in the Νorthwestern part of Greece, the city of Ioannina, is nowadays situated in the most nodal point of Epirus, lying on the crossroads of Egnatia and Ionia Highways connecting the country from north to the south and vice versa, as it can be reached by airplane via Athens or by using several means of transportation, such as car or bus.

By plane

The best and quickest way to reach Ioannina is by air via Athens, since Eleftherios Venizelos’s International Airport is well connected with the rest of the world.   
The direct flight’s duration is approximately 1h:15m and is served by Aegean Airlines.
You can book a (return) domestic flight from Athens International Airport to “King Pyrrhus” International Airport via the official Aegean Airlines website: en.aegeanair.com.
Two direct flights from Athens to Ioannina are scheduled daily, one at 14:15 and one at 20:45, while respectively, the flights from Ioannina to Athens are scheduled at 16:00 and at 22:30 daily. However, the schedule of the flights very often changes and thus you are kindly requested to visit regularly the official site of  “King Pyrrhus” airport.
Ioannina National Airport, ”King Pyrrhus” is located 4 km from the center of town  and is accessible by city bus (the ticket costs 1.20€) or by taxi.  
Taxi service from Ioannina airport to city center costs about 10,00 €.

By bus

The access to Ioannina city is possible by bus through intercity bus, KTEL Ioannina SA, since there are multiple routes served daily, from (and to) Athens, Thessaloniki, Igoumenitsa, Patra and other Greek cities.     
For details about schedules, trip durations, and tickets you may visit the Ioannina Bus Company’s official website at ktelioannina.gr/en/       
Please note that a bus trip from Thessaloniki to Ioannina takes approximately 3,30 hours, whereas a bus trip from Athens to Ioannina takes 5,20 hours.     
You may also take under consideration that intercity bus stations at Thessaloniki and Athens are frequently connected with the corresponding international airports (SKG and ATH, respectively) by urban bus services (airport to bus station routes in Thessaloniki and Athens take approximately 1 hour). Taxi service from Ioannina intercity bus station to the city center costs about 7 euro.

By car

Egnatia Odos or Egnatia Motorway extends from the western port of Igoumenitsa to the eastern Greek, while Ionia Odos or Ionia Motorway, runs through the west side of Greece to Ioannina city, connecting the ports of Patra, Astakos, and Igoumenitsa.    
Both Egnatia and Ionia Highways are extremely safe and modern, eliminating the distance and travel time between the cities they cross, giving the traveler the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing journey.              
The driving distance between Athens to Ioannina Airport is 415 km and it takes approximately 4h 30m to drive from Athens to Ioannina whereas the corresponding distance from Thessaloniki is 260km, which translates to 2h30 minutes of driving.

By boat

Ioannina is easily connected - via Egnatia Motorway - to the port of Igoumenitsa, the closest port with Italy and Balkan coutries of the Adriatic Sea via. There are regular ferries from Igoumenitsa traveling to ports on the north as well as on the south of Italy, since there are regular ferries from Igoumenitsa to Ancona, Venice, Bari and Brindisi (vice versa)
